About This Event

The “Arboretum Tour & Program: Second Wind” event takes place on September 30, 2026, at Second Wind Arboretum in Newport, RI.

  • Stroll through the 2.7-acre Second Wind Arboretum, a gem in the Ocean Drive Neighborhood.
  • Discover Gingko plantings, forested wetlands featuring native serviceberry and red maple, and the owner’s Heritage Collection of specimen trees.
  • Participate in a plant propagation workshop focused on rooting semi-hardwood cuttings.
  • Receive materials to build a small propagation tent and take cuttings from suitable plants within the Second Wind collections to root at home.
  • Gain insights from Living Collections Manager Joe Verstandig, property manager Patrick Sweeny, and Nursery Manager Abby Snoeren-Place.

This event is ideal for anyone interested in exploring unique arboretum collections, learning about native plants, and acquiring practical skills in plant propagation. NTC Members receive a discount.

Programme

  • 1:00 PM - 2:30 PM Arboretum Tour and Plant Propagation Workshop
    • Short tour of nursery led by Joe Verstandig and Patrick Sweeny, discussing interesting species and cultivars.
    • Discussion and demonstration on rooting semi-hardwood cuttings by Abby Snoeren-Place and Joe Verstandig.
    • Participants build small propagation systems and take cuttings from the collections to root at home.
