About This Event

“Welcome to Florida Gardening 201” is a series of three classes taking place from September 3 to September 17, 2026, at the UF IFAS Duval County Extension Office in Jacksonville, FL.

What to Expect

  • A series of 3 classes tailored for individuals new to Florida or new to landscape care.
  • Dig deeper into popular topics such as lawn care, plant selection, and landscape design.
  • Learn how to manage your own lawn care, attract pollinators, and identify drought/frost-tolerant native plants.
  • Gain knowledge on best practices for designing and installing a Florida-Friendly landscape.
  • Option to register for individual classes or purchase a discounted 3-class package.
  • Classes are held on three consecutive Thursday evenings.

Who Should Attend

This series is ideal for individuals who have recently moved to Florida or are new to caring for a Florida lawn or garden, offering an advanced version of the popular “Welcome to Florida Gardening 101” to deepen their understanding.

  • Price: A package ticket offers savings of $5 compared to individual class registration. Eventbrite fees are non-refundable.

  1. Class 1 - DIY Your Lawn Care: Thursday, September 3, 5:30-7:30 PM. Topics include Understanding your Home Irrigation System, Common Lawn Pests and Diseases in NE FL, Weed Management, Soil Testing and Fertilization.
  2. Class 2 - Right Plant Right Place: Thursday, September 10, 5:30-7:30 PM. Topics include Selecting Good Specimens at the Nursery, Florida-Friendly Landscape Design Tips, Establishing Trees & Shrubs, Common Toxic FL Landscape Plants.
  3. Class 3 - Attracting Wildlife: Thursday, September 17, 5:30-7:30 PM. Topics include Plant and Pollinator Relationships, Native Plants for NE FL Landscapes, The Great Southeast Pollinator Census-Citizen Science in Action.
