About This Event

“A Year of Gardening, Cooking & Connecting!” is a year-long series of hands-on workshops held at The Hive Community Resource Hub in Burton, SA, running from February 7, 2026, to December 5, 2026.

What to Expect

  • Hands-on learning from garden to kitchen, covering growing food, cooking meals, and building community.
  • Gain practical skills, engage in seasonal activities, and learn sustainable living practices.
  • Learn garden planning, soil preparation, composting, seed starting, propagation, preserving harvests, and kitchen crafts.
  • Participate in a welcoming, collaborative environment.

Who Should Attend

This program is designed for individuals aged 13 and above who wish to gain confidence and knowledge in gardening and cooking, while connecting with their community.

Practical Information

Sessions are 2 hours long and conducted in person.

  1. 2026-02-07: Growing Together: Planning & Preparing the Hive Garden (Garden design, soil prep, composting, planting seedlings)
  2. 2026-03-07: Seed to Feed: Starting Seeds & Propagating Plants (Seed sowing, cuttings, propagation techniques)
  3. 2026-04-04: Compost in Action: Building Healthy Soil (Building a compost heap, worm farming, bokashi systems)
  4. 2026-05-02: Harvest & Store: Intro to Lacto-Fermentation & Pickling (Brining and vinegar pickling for seasonal produce)
  5. 2026-06-06: Winter in the Kitchen: Say Cheese! (Making quick cheeses like ricotta, paneer, and mozzarella)
  6. 2026-07-04: Winter in the Kitchen: Sourdough Baking 101 (Sourdough basics, starter care, baking)
  7. 2026-08-01: Winter in the Kitchen: Gluten-Free Bread Making (Mastering two gluten-free bread styles and flour blends)
  8. 2026-09-05: Spring into Action: Building Wicking Beds (Constructing water-wise wicking beds)
  9. 2026-10-03: Spring into Action #2: Companion Planting & Summer Veg (Planting seasonal veggies and herbs, learning soil health and companion planting)
  10. 2026-11-14: Spring into Action #3: Seed Saving Workshop (Collecting, cleaning, and storing seeds to preserve heirloom varieties)
  11. 2026-12-05: Design Your Own Permaculture Garden & Harvest Celebration (Planning a home garden using permaculture principles, harvest meal)
