Connecting Florida-Friendly Landscaping(TM) Principles to Urban Forestry will be held on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, at UF/IFAS Sumter County Extension in Bushnell, FL.

What to Expect

  • Learn how each of the nine Florida-Friendly Landscaping(TM) Principles relates to Urban Forestry.
  • Participate in an interactive day featuring lectures and hands-on activities.
  • Gain insights from seven Extension agents and regional experts.
  • Topics include right tree, right place, watering, fertilizing, wildlife resources, urban tree pests, trees and water, and managing municipal tree debris.
  • Registration includes lunch, snacks, and handouts.

This workshop is designed for individuals interested in understanding the connection between Florida-Friendly Landscaping principles and urban forestry practices.

Programme

  • 8:30 am-8:45 am Check-in
  • 8:45 am-9 am Welcome and pretest
  • 9 am-10 am Right Tree, Right Place (site selection, tree quality, infrastructure, soil testing, construction plans, planting distances)
  • 10 am-10:30 am Practice with site plans
  • 10:30 am-11:30 am Watering and Fertilizing Urban Trees (efficient watering and appropriate fertilizing for urban trees)
  • 11:30 am-11:45 am Break
  • 11:45 am-12:45 pm Trees as Wildlife Resources (environmental benefits of trees for wildlife, specific trees for pollinators and birds)
  • 12:45 pm-1:30 pm Lunch-Provided
  • 1:30 pm-2:30 pm Urban Tree Pests of Florida (highlighting urban tree and palm pests, diseases, and management strategies)
  • 2:30 pm-2:45 pm Insect ID activity
  • 2:45 pm-3:45 pm Trees and Water (using trees for runoff collection, flood reduction, and managing urban water issues)
  • 3:45 pm-4:45 pm Managing Municipal Tree Debris (municipal tree waste management, recycling, and examples for homeowners)
  • 4:45 pm-5:00 pm post-test and wrap-up.
